NOT HOLDING BACK ! ACTIVISTS READY FOR PROTEST

Written by on August 5, 2024

ACTVIA coalition of organizations under the banner of the Grand Coalition has voiced strong criticism of the upcoming demonstration organized by Malawi First, led by Bon Kalindo, set for August 8, 2024.

The protest is aimed at opposing the Malawi Revenue Authority’s (MRA) recent decision to implement excise tax stamps on various products.

The MRA’s initiative seeks to boost revenue collection, curb the consumption of goods hazardous to health, and tackle smuggling. Despite these goals, the move has sparked significant debate.

Agape Khombe, leader of the Grand Coalition, spoke to the media earlier today, expressing robust support for the MRA’s policy. Khombe emphasized the severe losses Malawi endures due to smuggling and underscored the need for such measures to protect the nation’s economy.

“Smuggling is a significant issue that drains our resources and undermines legitimate businesses,” Khombe stated. “The MRA’s decision is a necessary step to combat these challenges and ensure a healthier, more stable economic environment.”

Efforts to reach Bon Kalindo for his comments were unsuccessful, as our calls went unanswered.

The controversy surrounding the MRA’s new policy continues to grow, with stakeholders deeply divided on its potential effectiveness and broader implications.
