Malawi, Kenya Strengthen Cooperation on Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism

The evolving threat of terrorism and violent extremism is driving African countries to strengthen regional cooperation, intelligence sharing and coordinated security responses.

The Kenya National Counter Terrorism Centre (KNCTC) has hosted a delegation from the Malawi Defence Force Senior Command and Staff Course No. 5 of 2026 for discussions aimed at promoting professional knowledge exchange and strengthening regional approaches to countering terrorism and violent extremism.

The Malawian delegation was led by Major General V. P. S. Moyo, Commandant of the Malawi Defence Force Senior Command and Staff College. The delegation was received by the KNCTC leadership, led by Deputy Director General Brigadier Yahya Mohamed.

The engagement provided the Malawian officers with an opportunity to gain insights into Kenya’s counter-terrorism architecture and its approaches to addressing emerging regional and global security threats.

Key areas of discussion included the prevention and countering of violent extremism, terrorist financing, emerging technologies and cyber-enabled threats. Participants also examined the role of intelligence-led operations, inter-agency coordination and community resilience in detecting, disrupting and preventing terrorist activities.

Brigadier Mohamed emphasised the importance of security institutions staying ahead of emerging threats rather than waiting for them to materialise. He stressed that stronger intelligence capabilities, timely information sharing and closer cooperation among security agencies are essential in responding effectively to threats that increasingly cross national borders.

The engagement between the KNCTC and the Malawi Defence Force highlights the importance of regional partnerships and knowledge exchange in strengthening Africa’s collective capacity to address terrorism and violent extremism.
