Industry 4.0 Lab Boosts Skills & Energy Growth in Central Africa

Written by on April 10, 2026

A landmark partnership between Perenco Cameroon, Perenco Gabon, and the UCAC-ICAM Institute is reshaping the future of technical education and workforce development in Central Africa. The collaboration will establish a state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 laboratory in Douala, designed to align academic training with the rapidly evolving needs of the energy and industrial sectors.

The facility—structured as a mini-factory—will provide students with hands-on access to advanced automation systems, digital simulation tools, robotics, and smart production technologies. This practical learning environment is expected to significantly reduce the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, equipping graduates with the industry-ready skills required to thrive in modern energy and industrial operations across the region.

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has endorsed the initiative as a scalable model for local content development. By embedding Industry 4.0 capabilities into higher education, the project directly supports the Chamber’s mandate to enhance in-country value creation and expand workforce participation across Africa’s energy value chain. It also addresses persistent skills shortages that have historically limited the ability of local talent to fully participate in large-scale energy projects, paving the way for greater reliance on domestically trained professionals.

Students across multiple disciplines will benefit from immersive, specialized training. General Engineering students will gain experience in robotics and virtual reality simulations, while those in Computer Science Engineering will focus on industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems and smart technologies. Process Engineering students will work with automated production systems, and Petroleum program participants will develop expertise in energy systems and instrumentation control. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that graduates are equipped to meet the complex demands of modern industrial environments.

The partnership also underscores Perenco’s long-term commitment to sustainable development and capacity building in Cameroon and Gabon. By investing in local talent, the company is helping build a pipeline of skilled engineers and technicians capable of contributing to key projects, including operations in the Rio del Rey Basin and infrastructure developments such as the Cap Lopez LNG terminal. Notably, graduates from UCAC-ICAM are already being recruited by leading companies in Douala, signaling strong industry demand for locally trained, job-ready professionals.

According to NJ Ayuk, the initiative represents the type of collaboration needed to secure Africa’s energy future. He emphasizes that building local skills is essential for creating a competitive and sustainable energy sector, and that partnerships between industry and academia are key to ensuring Africans take a leading role in developing the continent’s natural resources.

Ultimately, the UCAC-ICAM Industry 4.0 laboratory stands as a strategic investment in Africa’s industrial and technological transformation. By strengthening local capacity, accelerating technology adoption, and fostering a new generation of highly skilled professionals, the initiative aligns with a broader vision of a self-sufficient, innovative, and globally competitive African energy sector—one where local talent is not only included but positioned at the forefront of growth and development.
