MORE OPPORTUNITIES IN MALAWI

Written by on March 13, 2025

Malawi’s first Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Madalitso Kazombo, has urged international investors to explore opportunities in Malawi’s agricultural sector.
Speaking at the XII Global Baku Forum, themed “Rethinking World Order: Turning Challenges into Opportunities,” Kazombo outlined the untapped potential of the sector, citing the need for mechanization, value addition, improved irrigation systems, and road infrastructure in rural areas to connect farmers to markets.
The forum, organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, brings together global leaders and policymakers to discuss pressing global issues.
Kazombo’s address focused on Malawi’s agricultural landscape, which remains a cornerstone of the country’s economy but requires significant investment to modernize and compete on a global scale.
“Malawi’s agricultural sector holds immense opportunities, but these can only be realized through strategic investments in mechanization, value addition, irrigation, and road infrastructure in rural areas to ensure farmers can access markets and increase productivity,” Kazombo stated.
He also stressed the importance of youth and women empowerment, noting that engaging these groups in agriculture would drive innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth.
Kazombo further explained that empowering women and youth through training, access to resources, and financial support would not only boost agricultural productivity but also create jobs, reduce poverty, and enhance food security in the region.
He added that investing in irrigation systems would help farmers mitigate the effects of climate change, ensuring consistent crop yields even during dry seasons.
The Deputy Speaker’s call comes at a time when Malawi is seeking to diversify its economy and attract foreign direct investment. With its fertile land and favorable climate, Malawi has the potential to become a regional agricultural hub, provided it secures the necessary resources, technology, and infrastructure.
The XII Global Baku Forum, which runs from March 13 to 15, 2025, continues to serve as a platform for dialogue on global challenges and opportunities, with Malawi’s agricultural sector now firmly on the radar for potential investors.
