AU Launches Youth Governance Programme

The African Union has launched a four-day youth capacity-building programme in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together young leaders from across Africa to strengthen their understanding of democratic governance, human rights, peace and security, civic participation and responsible leadership.

The programme is being organised by the African Union Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security through the AGA-APSA Secretariat, with support from partners including ACCORD.

The initiative seeks to equip young Africans with practical knowledge and skills to participate more effectively in governance, defend human rights, promote accountability and contribute to peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Speakers at the opening emphasised that young people should not be viewed only as future leaders. They are already playing important roles as entrepreneurs, journalists, activists, innovators, community leaders and citizens.

A key focus of the programme is the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, alongside other African Union instruments addressing constitutionalism, the rule of law, human rights and citizen participation.

The programme is part of the African Union’s broader efforts to advance Agenda 2063 and strengthen citizen ownership of Africa’s governance, peace and security agenda.
