Guyana’s Oil Boom Drives Economic Growth
Written by Kradio on August 27, 2026
Guyana’s rapidly expanding oil industry is transforming its economy, with GDP projected to grow by 16.2% in 2026. Oil production is expected to increase by 17.9%, averaging around 840,000 barrels per day, generating billions of dollars in export earnings and government revenue.
The country plans to significantly increase production, targeting 1.3 million barrels per day by 2027 and 1.7 million by 2030. Major offshore developments, including the $12.7 billion Uaru project, are expected to further boost oil output and could help expand Guyana’s economy to between $50 billion and $69 billion by 2030.
The oil boom is also benefiting businesses outside the petroleum sector. Between 2019 and 2025, the industry reportedly spent about $3.6 billion with local businesses, supporting companies in construction, logistics, engineering, manufacturing, transport and financial services.
Oil revenues are also being channelled into national development. Guyana plans to build 40,000 homes over five years, while investing in healthcare, education, transport and energy projects, including a 300 MW Gas-to-Energy project. Its Natural Resource Fund had exceeded $3.1 billion by the end of 2024.
Guyana’s rapid economic transformation is attracting growing regional attention. The country’s oil and gas sector will be a major focus of Caribbean Energy Week 2027, with an industry launch event scheduled for September 1, 2026, in Georgetown to discuss investment opportunities and how petroleum wealth can support long-term economic development.
